Antimicrobial Additive
Silicone products are naturally anti-fungal, meaning they do not feed themselves any bacteria that forms on its surface. However, they do not prevent foreign substances on its surface from forming fungus.
Silicone can be enhanced by adding a silver based antimicrobial additive. This silver ion powder controls the growth of bacteria cells on surfaces by binding to them and blocking their respiratory system. By doing so, energy production and cell division is stopped meaning bacteria cannot replicate or survive. This additive slowly releases silver ions, which will last the lifetime of the product it is added to. For silicone, that’s about 10 years!
Having been tested against organisms such as E.coli, MRSA and Salmonella, these products are ideal for use in pharmaceutical applications. Furthermore, the active ingredient does not leech or wash out, meaning products containing the antimicrobial additive meet FDA regulations.
